International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Until last September I along with thousands of others believed that slavery had been abolished. How wrong I was. In fact I had never heard about the UN International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Slavery was not something that I was really taught about at school and not being exposed to the historical issues of the slave trade, via my history lessons, meant that my understanding of the issues then was not that developed - apart from that slavery was abhorrent, indefensible and mostly importantly now illegal. The fact I understand now and find most shocking is that slavery never went away . When I was offered the opportunity to work on a way of helping end contemporary slavery last year, you can imaging my surprise. This was a problem I didn't know a whole lot about and it could not possibly be happening in 2016. I was introduced to the concept of modern slavery and since that day in late September my knowledge of the topic has grown considerably. It is mind blowing that

National Earth Observation Conference 2018

National Earth Observation Conference 2018 (Day 3) 6th September 2018 University of Birmingham RSPsoc, National Centre for Earth Observation and Centre for EO Instrumentation Conference Poster downloaded from here The National Earth Observation Conference (NEOcon) 2018 is the largest Earth Observation (EO) conference held annually within the U.K. held by the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPsoc). This year the event was held by the University of Birmingham and I attended the third day of the conference to visit sessions which were related to the ways in which EO can be used to assist with governments in a general capacity, as well as the uses of EO technology specifically for development assistance. Over the course of the day I attended a number of sessions which looked at the benefits of EO data for government applications and by extension development assistance, many of the projects presented in the latter session were funded by the UK Space Agency'

3 Papers, 2 Sectors, 1 Important Crisis

As we somehow power into the final three months of the year I thought it important to share some updates for the publications that I have been involved in now that they are readily available and out in the world. Working in an ever changing research landscape can be tough, but I think it is important to reflect on the really interesting work that you can be involved in. The scope of the methods, topics and journals that these papers are associated with, really reflect the myriad of work that we undertake in order to address the impact of modern slavery and its connections to environmental degradation and climate change. This is something that is really exciting to be involved in! Below are the three papers that I have been involved over and that have been published so far in 2021, available with a short summary.
